RYE BAY 228

Loa 2.3m (7’ - 6”)
Beam 1.2m (3’ - 11”)
Draft 0.14m (0’ - 5.5”)
Dry Weight  22kgs (Row)
Maximum Load  227kg (500lbs)
Crew 2 Adults

The "RYE BAY 228"  is the MkIV version of this design as a stitch & tape boat. It is 7' - 6" long with a good 4' beam makes for a small but spacious boat with an approximate dry weight of 50lbs (22kg). It is built in 6mm ply or can be 6mm on the bottom and 4mm sides for a light duty, light weight boat. This design started out as a fully framed, plywood planked boat I designed for me to sail round my local harbour and now, with the fourth re-design, it is an easy build hull using our plywood, pre-cut kit ready for the timber seats and trim. It has been a popular design and was the first of my designs we sold as a complete boat. It has had many uses - as a tender, a work boat, a fishing boat and as a sailing dinghy. It can take a small outboard motor - 2hp petrol or electric and can have optional built in buoyancy tanks. The kit also has a sail rig option.

New  RYE BAY 10

Loa 3.04m (10’ – 0”)
Beam 1.37m (5’ – 0”)
Draft 0.178m (0’ – 7”)
Approx. Dry Weight 58kgs (130lbs)

The "RYE BAY 10" is 10' - 0" long with a 5' beam and a dry weight of 130lbs (58kg) for a maximum crew weight of 520lbs (236kg). This results in a much roomier boat for her size. Built from plywood with 9mm bottom panel and 6mm sides, she presents very little extra work than her smaller sister. She can be rowed, motored or sailed but the kit does not have a sail rig option. She was originally intended as a motor runabout but would lend herself to sailing as well. There are buoyancy tanks fore and aft as an option. It is built with a slightly curved stem for a more pleasing look. More of these are built with a deck these days and this is now an option. The fore seat is omitted and replaced by the deck.

WINCHELSEA 2.2

Loa 2.26m (7’ – 6”)
Beam 1.19m (3’ – 11”)
Draft 0.127m (0’ – 5”)
Dry Weight 22.5kgs (50lbs)

The Winchelsea 2.2 is available as a kit and the planks are cut from a standard sheet of 2.44m x 1.22m plywood - no scarfing (joining plank sections) is required. It is different from its larger sister as it does not have a long keel which is replaced by a flat keel plank onto which a length of timber and a skeg are fitted. The open edge of the stem is capped with thin strips of wood that are carefully bent round to join at the keel.

The flat keel plank makes for an easier build but it is still built in the same way - over a mould (included in the full kit). However, it could be built using stitch & tape if you don’t mind the stitch holes. If you’re painting your hull inside and out, this is not a problem but, if you want to varnish your hull then don’t use it.

WINCHELSEA 10

Loa 3.04m (10’ – 0”)
Beam 1.37m (4’ – 6”)
Draft 0.178m (0’ – 7”)
Approx. Dry Weight 30kgs (130lbs) Rowing Version

The "WINCHELSEA 10". The pictures show two great examples from first time builders. A very similar looking larger version of her 8’ sister, continuing with the clinker style hull, 6 planks per side, multi-purpose Rowing/Motor or Sailing dinghy that can be used as a tender to a yacht or larger vessel or for a day of fun on the local water. She is 10’ - 0" in length, 4’ - 6" beam and designed to be as light as possible for her size and construction. Although she could be carried on the roof rack of a large car, she is far more suited to a small trailer. She will also take a small lightweight outboard 2hp - 3.5hp for motoring up and down the local river, canal, harbour or around the local lake. Electric outboards are an option with this boat too. The plans detail the transom outboard pad to add strength. Built in buoyancy can be added by enclosing the seats or inflatable buoyancy bags can be used. This kit is available for rowing or a motor.

NEW BAY 11

Loa 10’ – 10” (3.332m)

Height at Bow/Stern 17"/17" (0.432m/0.432m)
 Height amidships 12 1/4" (0.311m)
Crew 1 adult or two children

Designed for me to go canoeing with my eldest two with their Peasemarsh 10's. Although I could have used my old Peasemarsh 16 that would normally carry me, my wife and the two youngest, I wanted something different just for me so, I designed the New Bay 11 having liked the performance of the 15 previously during trials. The 11 did not disappoint. It was easy to build and performed as I wanted. This a nice, strong, lightweight canoe that gives a good performance and is easy to move around single-handed.
