Canoes are a very cheap and easy way to get on the water plus have some fun exercise.
I have enjoyed designing, building and paddling one or two. I look forward to getting out for a paddle when I can.

A canoe, depending on size, will fit on the roof rack of most cars, is easily carried to and from the water, performs well on it and is a healthy activity (but remember to be safe. Wear the correct buoyancy aid).
Our full design range is for Stitch & Tape building which has been dictated by asking most of those who expressed an interest what they wanted. There will eventually be mostly different types of open canoes with one kayak design - eventually. There will be Clinker Plywood designs too and the Newmarsh is one that can be built in that method.
A basic 12' open canoe takes around 25hrs - 30hrs to build from scratch and can be built in a couple of long weekends.

Peasemarsh Open Canadian Style Canoe

10, 12, 14 & 16

A popular open “Canadian” style canoe design. All the sizes have the same lines just different lengths and widths along with the ability to carry more the larger they get. Their performance has proved to be better than I expected, they track well even in a breeze with choppier conditions and are quite stable. All were designed to be paddled while kneeling but, as is far more popular these days, seats are an option and the plans do detail them. There are bulkheads fore and aft which, along with the decks, form a watertight compartment or buoyancy tanks. These can be fitted with small hatches for storage of valuables etc and to air the compartments when not in use. Alternatively, drain plugs or a simple hole drilled through the base with a cork or rubber bung to stop the water getting in could be used. In any case, some form of drainage should be fitted to them.

The 10 & 12 can be built in either 4mm or 6mm plywood but the larger ones should be 6mm, and they require between 25 and 40 hours to complete.

These canoes are ideal for a solo paddle with some gear but will take a load.

The 10 footer (3.05m) will take one average adult around 12 stone (75kgs) and perhaps a small one or some gear.

The 12’ version will take a total Crew/Gear load of 28 stone (180kgs).

The 14’ canoe is able to take 3 adults plus at a total load of 580lbs (263kgs) and

The 16 footer will carry 3 adults easily with a maximum load of 650lbs (295kgs).

They can carried on a car roof rack, depending on the size of the car to the size of the canoe. There is a limit to how much overhang you can have and you must not restrict you view from the drivers seat. If you have a suitable four door car then it will also suit an inflatable roof rack or canoe car kit.

This design, in all sizes, is great on the water once you get used to her and will surprise you with their performance.

We do have an 18’ version on the drawing board which will have an electric outboard option for cruising rather than paddling.

Peasemarsh 8 Fun Canoe Plans.

This little canoe is more of a play thing but can be and is used (under supervision) by kids or a small adult.
My own teenagers have built and used this canoe though now they will be building bigger ones. It is also being regularly built by a charity who have a mini regatta every year.
 It is a little under 8'  at 7' - 7" (2.31m) long and 2' - 2" wide at it's widest point.
Built in 4mm plywood, it is also very light.
It has been built as a garden ornament/planter and a toy box.

A printed version of the plans including postage  -  £10.00.

The plans are a download for just £5

Newmarsh 13 Canoe

Length  3.81m  (12' - 6")
 Beam    864mm  (2' - 10")
Height Fore & Aft  458mm (18")
Height amidships  330mm  (13")
Dry Weight of around  21kg (45lbs).
Maximum Load  182kgs  (400lbs)
Crew  2

Designed for a day trip or just some fun on the water and to be paddled while kneeling or possibly sitting on the bottom but can be fitted with simple plywood seats.
Easily moved about on dry land by an adult with one hand using the centre bar. Just as easily carried by two people to the water
Once on the water you will find this canoe performs well and is relatively stable. It is ideal for a solo paddle but will do just as well with two adults.
This canoe was designed to be built using the Stitch & Tape method but it can be built using a version of Clinker Plywood. The plans currently only detail the Stitch & Tape build but the other option will be added soon.
It can be built in either 4mm or 6mm plywood and when finished, is a very good looking craft - in my opinion.

New Bay 15 Open Sailing Canoe

Example picture from design drawings

Based on our Burmarsh and Peasemarsh designs the New Bay Open Canoe has been interesting to design and a joy test.
It will be available as a single plans package that will detail how to build it as a paddling canoe and adding the sail rig. Plus, details for building it in two halves to allow it to be built in smaller workshops and for easier transportation.
As much at home being paddled as sailing we have found this to be a fun, capable canoe for one or two people to enjoy.
It can be built to paddle first and the rig added later or can be built as the full sailing canoe and, as the rig is de-mountable, you can use it as the mood takes you on the day.
The plans include both the paddling and basic sailing versions.

New Bay 11 Open Canoe

Loa 10’ – 10” (3.332m)
Beam 2’ – 6” (0.8109m)
Weight (apprx.) 40lbs (18kgs)
Max. Load (apprx.) 350lbs (159kgs)
Height at Bow/Stern 17"/17" (0.432m/0.432m)
 Height amidships 12 1/4" (0.311m)
Crew 1 adult or two children

Designed for me to go canoeing with my eldest two in their Peasemarsh 10's. Although I could have used my old Peasemarsh 16 that would normally carry me, my wife and the two youngest, I wanted something different just for me so, I designed the New Bay 11 having liked the performance of the 15 previously during trials. The 11 did not disappoint. It was easy to build and performed as I wanted.

New Bay 13 Open Canoe

LOA 13 - 4” (4.064m)
Beam 2’ - 10” (.864m)
Height fwd/aft 1’ - 7” (0.483m)
Height Amidships 1’- 1” (0.330m)
Approx. Dry Weight 40lbs (19kgs)
Crew 1 or 2 Adults

This canoe is the same as the New Bay 11 but with a couple of feet added after a request from a client to suit his requirements from this design.

When it was built, the performance was just as good as the 11 but the extra space made it more comfortable and felt a little more stable.

It has been used with a Kayak “Wind Scout” pop up sail and moved along nicely.

Also, the first one built was used with a small electric outboard with a home-made side mount that reportedly worked very well.

Serena 12 Motor Canoe

LOA   12’ - 6” (3.81m)
Beam  3’ - 11” (1.15m)
Approx. Dry Weight 110lbs (50kg)
Approx. Max Load  550lbs  (250kg)

We were asked to design a motor canoe for a client who had previously built one of our Rye Bay 228's. He wanted a simple build and a specific size to fit in his boathouse. We came up with the design but couldn't think of a name for it so it was named after his boat.
It is  fairly lightweight and was intended for use as a lake fishing boat powered by an electric motor.
He reported a stable, easy driven craft which was ideal for him and his son to go fishing with.
The build consists of cutting out pre-shaped plywood panels and stitching them together to get the shape of the boat.
